Take a look at the latest press release from DAVOSA Watches:
The DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic is the first watch for freedivers
Nik Linder holds five world records for distance diving under ice, two German records for distance diving in a lake, the record for the longest underwater kiss, as well as the longest apnoea dive, suspended from the ceiling with his head in an aquarium – there’s no question that Nik can hold his breath for long and knows when to resurface. The freediving star now relies on the watch that he helped develop: the DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic.
A great deal of discussion proceeded the development process and one thing was particularly important to Nik Linder: “The watch should not only be a watch and fashion accessory with additional functions – it should transport the whole freediving way of life. This extreme sport is not simply about physical endurance, but also about strengthening your mind, self-reflection, meditation and achieving a greater degree of inner peace.”
The first striking new feature of the DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic is the multi-coloured ring around the dial. It sports the French national colours only by chance. In fact the colours blue, white and red replicate an internationally recognised breathing exercise in freediving: A breath is taken during the five-second blue phase, it is held for 15 seconds (white area) and then air is expelled over 10 seconds (red area). With the help of this colour code, the freediver can concentrate fully on this vital breathing exercise without needing to count or use a stopwatch.
The watch in the watch
The watch must be held in an upright position for these breathing exercises – without the need for improvised support, if possible. The DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic offers the perfect solution, and is thus a watertight professional freediving instrument. By unscrewing the crown at 3 o’clock, the middle section of a slightly curved, 42 mm stainless steel case can be extracted. Thanks to a hinged ring that is attached to the middle section, the diver can now safely erect the remaining watch case while performing breathing exercises. Nik Linder added a further feature to the DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic: In contrast to scuba diving where the minute hand is crucial, in freediving it’s all about the seconds. Which is why the second hand bears a red tip, enabling exact reading of the seconds at all times.
Innovation for freedivers
The DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic is a worldwide innovation, uniting the highest Swiss watchmaking art with the unique demands of the freediver. A reliable Swiss SW 200 automatic movement is contained in a case with a water resistance of 20 ATM. Time can be read via the bezel with its rotatable ring. The coloured ring on the outer edge of the dial is additionally divided into seconds. And the hands and Arabic figures are naturally coated with Super-LumiNova, so the DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic remains readable even with poor underwater visibility.
Available in three versions
The DAVOSA Apnea Diver Automatic comes in three different versions: with a satined and scratch-resistant stainless steel case and black dial or alternatively with a completely PVD black plated case. Furthermore, a bicolor version with a stainless steel case in combination with a black bezel and PVD black plated crowns will be available. Each set also includes a second interchangeable strap, which is also made from wearable, lightweight and water-resistant rubber.
