Orca expedition & Basking Shark update

Our basking shark research expeditions ended in October, and although they had a quiet start we cataloged up to 30 sharks in the end. We will be working on the data over winter but our initial results look very interesting and we will be continuing to monitor the southerly migration next year. Lotte our Heriot-Watt University intern is almost finished her dissertation and we're looking forward to reading that in due course. 2016 shark numbers look to be around 450-500 mark which is less than 2015 but a much higher average. The population we are monitoring seems to be stable we are expanding to our data set showing some consistancy.

 

The last couple of months our seasonal staff have left for warmer shores with Luke now in Morocco conducting surf photography and Inga instructing in Indonesia and Maldives. Hannah is back in London doing teacher training and Kate pressing on with her Vet studies down near the Lakes. That leaves Nikki and Shane working hard out on all the plans for next year! Shane has some divers out around Oban and we had a manic period building up to Cearban being shipped off to the arctic this week. We don't have much a break with everything getting prepared for the arctic but hopefully after that expedition we'll manage some down time.

 

We are very close to our new website going online, hopefully this week and it will have an integrated booking system. There may be a possibility of spaces on week 3 of our orca expedition this coming January. Dates are 27th Jan - 3rd February and it would be on the open boat.
